Emery Down Almshouses Seeks A Charity Trustee And Clerk
Looking to volunteer locally, join a friendly and enthusiastic team, or gain experience as a Charity Trustee? If you are interested in social issues and live in Emery Down, Lyndhurst, or Minstead, we want to hear from you.
What We Do
The Charity of ‘Emery Down Almshouses’ manages the five almshouse cottages it holds in trust as charitable housing in the village. Its objectives are to provide secure and affordable housing for selected individuals with connections to the area, who can live independently, are recognised as 'in need' and wish to be part of the local community.
The Trustees must fulfil the Charity’s objectives and prevent breaches of trust, preserve the Grade II listed buildings for future generations and help sustain Emery Down as a diverse village community.
The Trustees hold quarterly Committee meetings on mutually convenient dates – currently in Emery Down at 4.30pm.
What the Clerk Does
The Clerk sits on the Charity's Committee as an elected Trustee and the role is to:
get to know residents and be their first point of contact.
prepare papers for and reports of Trustees’ Committee meetings.
take part in Trustees’ Committee meetings.
help select new residents.
liaise on policy matters with the Almshouse Association, the Charity Commission and other organisations when necessary.
preserve the Charity’s records.
maintain the Charity’s website.
Time commitments depend on actions agreed at the quarterly Committee meetings and current circumstances. The Clerk refers maintenance issues to a sub-Committee between meetings and works with fellow Trustees on practical issues as needed. The Clerk is in touch with residents but does not serve as a Warden.
